 Spirit Of The Trees

UNIQUE  CREATIONS  BY  CHRISTINA  SMITH.
ABOUT CHRISTINA

Like many people, I’m endlessly inspired by the natural world, but my deepest connection has always been with animals, fungi, and the humble wildflowers that grow along hedgerows and meadows. These quiet, often overlooked parts of nature have shaped my creativity for as long as I can remember.

I studied Natural History Illustration at Bournemouth & Poole Art College, which deepened my love of observing and honouring the details of the natural world. Over time, that desire to recreate texture and form led me toward working with clay. When I discovered cold porcelain—an air-drying clay that becomes beautifully hard and translucent—it felt like I had finally found the perfect medium. I’ve now been sculpting with it for more than two decades, and it continues to feel like a direct extension of my hands and my heart.

In recent years, my work has grown into a new direction: bas relief paintings. These pieces blend sculpture and painting, allowing me to create animals and meadow scenes with gentle texture and dimensionality. The raised wildflowers, grasses, and forms bring the artwork to life in a way that feels both tactile and tender—like nature stepping forward for just a moment.

Alongside my paintings, I also create symbolic animals and small spirit-like creatures on driftwood collected from the South Coast of England. These ‘Talking Sticks’ often hold personal meaning, and I am honoured to replicate the likeness of beloved pets onto these natural forms.
