Talking Sticks

My Talking Sticks are the heart of my creative journey and the pieces I have become most known for. For over ten years, I have been walking the Dorset coastline, collecting driftwood shaped by tide, weather, and time. Each piece carries its own presence, and before I begin any sculpting, I spend time simply holding the wood. In that quiet moment, I listen for what it wants to become.
I seem to tune into the spirit or character of the wood—its curve, its weight, its history—and from there the form reveals itself. I sculpt the animal head directly onto the driftwood using cold porcelain clay, which bonds naturally to the surface. Once the shape is complete, I paint the clay to blend seamlessly with the wood, allowing the creature to feel as though it has grown from the grain itself.
These Talking Sticks have travelled all over the world through my Etsy shop. They have found homes with therapists, teachers, and group leaders; with Brownie and Scout groups; with shamans using them in ceremony; with schools for talk-time activities; and with individuals who feel drawn to connect with their spirit guides or simply with the quiet wisdom of nature.
Each stick is unique—shaped by the sea, guided by intuition, and brought to life through careful sculpting. They are tools for storytelling, for holding space, for guidance, and for connection. Above all, they are a collaboration between driftwood, imagination, and the deeper sense of spirit that flows through the natural world.
If you would like a piece created especially for you, I’m always happy to discuss commissions.
