Antique Boxes and Witches' Spell Key Boxes

My antique boxes begin their journey as old wooden keepsake or jewellery boxes—pieces that already carry a quiet history of their own. I’ve always been drawn to objects with a past, and these boxes feel like small vessels of memory, waiting to be brought back to life.

When I restore and transform them, I think of them as story boxes. Each lid becomes the beginning of a tale: a painted scene that sets the mood and invites you into a small world. When you lift the lid, the story continues inside, with a hand-painted extension of the scene on the inner panel. It creates a feeling of stepping deeper into the moment, as though the box reveals a little more of its secret when opened.

I often work with gentle landscape elements, symbolic animals, or meadow-inspired imagery, blending paint with carefully chosen details to honour the box’s original character. I repair, paint, and finish each one with the intention of preserving its age while giving it a renewed sense of purpose.

These story boxes make beautiful keepsakes—perfect for holding letters, small treasures, jewellery, or personal mementos. Each one is entirely unique, shaped by its past and reimagined through the narrative it now carries.

My Witches’ Boxes, which hold a different energy and intention, have their own dedicated section.

If you’d like a custom story box created especially for you, I’m always happy to chat.

Witches' Spell Key Boxes

My Witches’ Spell Key Boxes are created from antique wooden boxes, each one restored and transformed into a small vessel of intention.

These pieces are inspired by the old tradition of spell keys—iron keys once carried, kept, or placed within the home as symbols of protection, thresholds, new beginnings, or the “unlocking” of specific wishes or energies. In many parts of Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries, keys were used in simple folk rituals and charms, often representing access, passage, or the opening of unseen doors.

Each of my boxes holds a genuine 18th-century iron key, chosen for its age, weight, and character. Every key is paired with a particular intention—such as protection, clarity, courage, new opportunities, or releasing the past.

The key becomes the heart of the box: a symbolic object that has already lived a long life, now given a new purpose.

Like my other antique story boxes, each Spell Key Box carries two illustrations:

  • one on the top of the lid, which sets the tone of the spell or intention,

  • and another on the inside of the lid, which continues the story when you open it.

These paintings often draw on quiet woodland imagery, symbolic animals, moonlit scenes, or simple elements of nature that resonate with the intention of the key. The inside scene always feels like stepping deeper into the story—that small moment of discovery when the lid opens and the meaning unfolds a little more.

Every box is truly one of a kind, shaped by its own history and the quiet magic of the key it protects. They make thoughtful gifts, personal talismans, or meaningful additions to an altar or sacred space.

If you would like a box created around a specific intention, symbol, or key energy, I’m always happy to talk about a custom piece.
